His love for film music is great, as is his musical talent. Now is the time to chase his childhood dream! Former Hardenberger Koen Cramer (24) left for Los Angeles on Monday. “In this magical city I will immerse myself in film music every day.” The young composer is determined about his leap into the dark: “Writing music for Hollywood films is what I dream of.”

“FILM MUSIC TOUCHES MY DEEPEST EMOTION”

As a seven-year-old boy, Koen Cramer got behind the piano, which he couldn’t get enough of. The young musician was caught early on by the film scores of major Hollywood films such as The Lion King and The Pirates of the Carribean. In his childhood home on the Burgemeester Schuitestraat in Hardenberg, he taught himself the tricks of the trade. “Since there was no sheet music to be found, I tried to copy the film music. Until I could do it. For example, with my left hand I played the bass I heard. That’s where composing started. ”

WIDE WORLD

Born and raised Hardenberger (24) chose ArtEZ Conservatory in Enschede after the Vechtdal College. He comes to Hardenberg every week for his family and a game of football at HHC, but the wider world has more appeal. During his studies MediaMusic he wrote fifty mails to production houses in Los Angeles, for composers of film music the place to be. He got an internship at Cavalry Music, a music production house for movie trailers, who made music for the trailers of Star Wars, Terminator and Aladdin, among others.

Now that the study is finished, America beckons again. “I have such a magical feeling at LA. It is one big creative chaos, which I only saw during my internship. I’m curious about that. I want to discover that ”, says Koen, who does not have to explore alone. During his internship he met his girlfriend Gina. The Mexican works as an actress and dancer in LA.

OWN STYLE

At Calvalry Music he can get started and make his own sound. “I like the big Hollywood sound, but my style is more minimalistic and introverted. Actually a mix of my great examples Hans Zimmer and Ólafur Arnalds ”, says the composer, who does not know exactly how the film music managed to get him. “I personally notice that you can achieve a deeper emotion with film music.”

Koen will write music and albums in the coming months together with experienced composers. “Now the focus is first on trailer music. In five years’ time, I hope to have made the transition to film music. ”

JUST DO IT

In early February Koen got on the plane. First for a few months, but who knows to settle for a long time in the city that has won his heart. “It is a leap of faith, but it is also a matter of just doing it. That’s not really in my DNA, but I’ve learned to follow my gut in recent years. You will discover new dreams that you never thought possible before. ”
